Welcome to Earle's Wisconsin AIDS Ride Page
We have all been affected by AIDS. For people my age, the disease first appeared as a mystery killer, a death sentence to all who contracted it. It is only through the efforts of the ARCW and many similar organizations that the prognosis is far better now than it was in the 1980s.
I am riding in memory of those friends who have died, those who are HIV positive and need assistance and for those who may never get it because of the efforts of ARCW.
My childhood friend Terry Rosenbaum’s twin brothers both died of AIDS when it was still killing gay men in their prime.
The Rosenbaums and our family were pretty close. I was less than a year older than Terry, and the twins just between my brother and sister. Lou the father and Harriet the mother played golf and bridge with my parents and Lou was our family doctor. Sometimes, the two even mixed, like the Friday night I interrupted the bridge game with a six-stitch gash in my leg.
Growing up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the 1960s, we knew the twins were different from other boys, but did not have language or cultural context to define what was different. I lost contact with them after their high school graduation, but never really forgot them. On reflection, I cannot imagine what it was like to grow up gay in that time and place. When I texted with Terry, he said that the idea of being gay was unheard of in the UP then.
But the lesson I now get from the story of the Rosenbaum twins is that we are all affected by AIDS, and those of us of a certain age have all lost friends or relatives to the disease.
